Music as Medicine

People know me as TPN Explorer, but there is another side of me that has kept me going through all of it, and that is the music. As Dr-Disco I have been on the decks since the late nineties, and I have never really stopped. It came before any of this, and it will still be there after, and there is something steadying about having one thing in your life that the illness never got a vote on.

There is something about music that reaches the places nothing else can. I cannot explain the mechanism and I have stopped trying to. On the days when my body is saying no, in that flat and final way it sometimes does, a good tune still says yes. It lifts my mood. It clears my head. It pulls me out of myself and into something bigger, which is exactly where you need to be on a day when the inside of your own head is not a good neighbourhood.

Playing on BoomFM, the station I helped build, gives me a purpose and a connection to people that has nothing whatsoever to do with feeds or lines. Nobody tuning in is thinking about any of that. For those hours I am just Daz behind the decks, doing a thing I am good at, and that matters more than I can properly put into words. It is not escapism. It is the opposite. It is the realest part of the week.

You do not have to be a DJ to feel it. This is not about being musical or having good taste or knowing anything technical. Whatever your music is, whatever it is that gets you, put it on, turn it up, and let it do its work. Give it your actual attention rather than having it on in the background while you do something else.

It really is a medicine of its own, and it is one of the very few with no side effects and no waiting list.
